Shawn Hendrix, producer and content creator of Operation Shelter, said that egg prices have surged in 2025, exceeding $8 per dozen in certain areas due to a severe bird flu outbreak and ongoing supply chain issues. Hendrix made this announcement on his X account on March 12.
"But rewind to the 1848 Gold Rush a single egg could cost $3, about $96 in today's dollars," said Hendrix, Chief of Staff. "Miners flooded California and supplies ran thin. History shows scarcity can turn a simple egg into gold. $8 seems like a steal!"
According to Food and Wine, by December 2024, the average price for a dozen large Grade A eggs had reached $4.15, marking a 37% increase from the previous year. Supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and rising feed costs have intensified the problem, making eggs one of the most costly staple food items in the U.S. market.
In response to rising egg prices, Waffle House has introduced a 50-cent surcharge per egg across its menu. The company attributed this decision to the ongoing bird flu outbreak, which has significantly reduced egg supplies and driven wholesale prices to unsustainable levels. Waffle House serves millions of eggs annually and said that this temporary surcharge is necessary to offset rising costs without major changes to its menu prices. This move reflects a broader trend in the restaurant industry where businesses are struggling with soaring ingredient costs, according to Retail Wire.
Axios reports that Uber has similarly faced increasing financial pressures due to rising insurance premiums, which have grown by nearly 50% per trip over the past three years. These escalating costs result from increased accident claims, legal system exploitation, and outdated state policies that have made insuring rideshare drivers more expensive. To mitigate these expenses, Uber has implemented new surcharges in various cities, leading to higher fares for passengers. The company warns that if insurance costs continue to rise, it could affect driver earnings and the affordability of rideshare services in the long term.
