In a compelling legal battle that could have far-reaching implications for tenant rights, a group of California residents has taken a stand against their landlord, alleging serious violations of privacy laws. On January 31, 2025, Jenna Meier, Scott Meier, Alison Roper, David D'Antoni, and Sean Prager filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California, County of Ventura against Global Integrity Realty Corporation. The plaintiffs claim that the defendant failed to comply with the Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act (ICRAA) and other tenant protection statutes.
The plaintiffs allege that Global Integrity Realty Corporation violated multiple provisions of the ICRAA by failing to provide necessary disclosures and reports related to tenant screening processes. According to the complaint, landlords like Global Integrity Realty Corporation often seek investigative consumer reports containing sensitive information about prospective tenants. These reports can include details about an individual's character and personal life. However, under California law, specific conditions must be met before such reports can be obtained or used.
Jenna Meier and her co-plaintiffs argue that Global Integrity Realty Corporation did not fulfill these legal obligations. They claim that the company failed to notify them about the procurement of these reports or provide them with copies upon request—both requirements under Civil Code section 1786.16. Furthermore, they accuse the corporation of deliberately planning these violations as part of unfair business practices.
The plaintiffs are seeking various forms of relief from the court. They demand actual damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy caused by these alleged breaches. Additionally, they seek statutory damages amounting to $10,000 per investigative report obtained without compliance with ICRAA provisions. The lawsuit also calls for punitive damages due to what they describe as willful misconduct on behalf of Global Integrity Realty Corporation.
Moreover, beyond monetary compensation, the plaintiffs are asking for declaratory relief and an injunction to prevent further violations by Global Integrity Realty Corporation. They aim not only to protect their own rights but also those of other tenants who might face similar issues in future dealings with this landlord or others across California.
