An L.A. woman claims she was wrongly fired by Walgreens after calling the police when she was threatened by a shoplifter who was looting the store in which she worked.

Plaintiff Marisela Ramos filed a lawsuit against Walgreens Co. on Jan. 5 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The case was removed to federal court on Feb. 5.

In the lawsuit, Ramos asserts she has repeatedly been subjected to hostile work situations in the store where she works from shoplifters, looters and other hostile customers.

The lawsuit centers on an incident on July 27, 2023, when she allegedly spotted a shoplifter in the act of looting the store. While the lawsuit says she only made eye contact with the shoplifter, she says the shoplifter began loudly threatening her.

Ramos called the police and followed their instructions during the incident, according to the complaint. However, the shoplifter allegedly later was arrested and threatened to sue Walgreens.

After that, Ramos claims Walgreens illegally fired her in retaliation for calling the police on the shoplifter.

She further claims the company violated the law by failing to provide her and other workers with a safe workplace.

Ramos is seeking unspecified damages, including punitive damages and attorney fees

Ramos is represented by attorneys Nicholas W. Sarris and Amanda Erickson from JML Law, of Woodland Hills.
