Fox Rothschild congratulates Darrell D. Miller and Heidy Vaquerano, who were selected to Variety’s Dealmakers of 2023 list.

The coveted annual list spotlights those in the industry who “overcame an economic climate defined by ballooning inflation, soaring interest rates and the threat of a recession.”

“Navigating the changing Hollywood landscape for his clients is what Miller does best,” touts Variety. This past year, Miller, Founding Chair of the Entertainment & Sports Law Department and Managing Partner of the firm’s Los Angeles Office, negotiated stand-up comedian Taylor Tomlinson’s deal to host “After Midnight,” CBS’ new late-night franchise, and two upcoming Netflix comedy specials. He also negotiated Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s role in Alexander Payne’s acclaimed “The Holdovers.” On the deals’ timing, Miller notes the disruption was tremendous and “could pose significant challenges to the industry moving forward.”

He says, “I don’t think the issues have been resolved. The future will continue to be fought over what the new economic models for participation for creatives should be in traditional media and the very rapidly approaching AI media.”

Vaquerano, a Partner in the Entertainment & Sports Law Department, is recognized for her role “brokering Tom DeLonge’s deal to rejoin Blink-182 after a decade-long hiatus as well as agreements related to the band’s hugely successful tour.”

Serving as outside counsel to HarbourView Equity Partners, Vaquerano helped to guide the global investment firm in music publishing, master recording, public performance royalties and post-closing deliverables. This past year, she played a key role in HarborView’s acquisition of Blackbear’s catalog and Christine McVie’s master recording income from Fleetwood Mac’s catalog.

“It’s a fertile ground for investment,” Vaquerano told Variety regarding the future of catalog acquisitions. “Music value is rising with change in mechanical royalty rates and we’re seeing more uses of music as far as streaming and potential uses in AI and Web3. Investors want to be a part of that.”
