A new poll is finding that the number of voters who want to topple Gov. Gavin Newsom is catching up with the 50% who want to keep him but, despite the 47% encroachment, at least one of the organizers of the Recall Gavin 2020 political cause isn’t counting the incumbent out until the last vote is cast.

“I do feel a sense of a shift in the attitude of just regular Californians who have Gavin Newsom fatigue and when you start getting fatigued from one of your key elected officials in the state who has so much direct power over your day-to-day life, that's not good for the individual,” said Randy Economy, senior advisor to former Congressman Doug Ose in his campaign for governor of California and senior advisor to the Recall Gavin 2020 movement.

The poll from the University of California, Berkeley, Institute of Governmental Studies further found that 40% of residents who will likely vote on the Sept. 14 recall election day are undecided.

“Polls change and the only poll that matters is the one on election day,” Economy told the Southern California Record. “That’s the truth in politics.”

But there remains some hope for those who are desperate to unseat Newsom. The poll found that 80% of Republican registered voters plan to vote compared to 55% of Democrats.

“In campaigns, if you have the enthusiasm factor on your side as a candidate or a ballot initiative, that's 90% of the battle,” Economy said. “I don't see the enthusiasm for people wanting to go out and save Gavin Newsom. The enthusiasm comes from people being told they can’t achieve something, which became a 'to work harder.' We were told you can’t topple Gavin Newsom in the bluest of the blue states because he’s like a rock star and has central casting good looks but we’re the underdog and people love a good underdog in politics.”

The first question on the ballot is whether participants in the recall election would like to remove the current governor from office, as previously reported in the Southern California Record. The second question lists all 47 candidates and asks voters to choose one with which to replace Gov. Newsom.

“The person who gets the most votes, which would be a simple majority, wins, and if there’s a dead heat after all the ballots are counted, then the court would determine the winner based on a provision in the election law,” Economy added.
