Man sues website for not making site blind accessible

Federal Court

LOS ANGELES -- A blind man is suing a website for allegedly not making the site accessible to those visually impaired.

Luis Licea filed a complaint on May 25 in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles against Rugs.com, LLC, a South Carolina corporation and Does 1-10 for violations of the Unruh Civil Rights Act, California Civil Code 51. The case has been removed to Los Angeles federal court.

According to the complaint, Licea is a blind man who requires screen reading software to read website content and access the internet. Licea alleges that Rugs.com contains numerous access barriers that prevent a person of visual impairment to access and navigate the website contents. Licea alleges that this violates full and equal access of the website and products or services offered and therefore a violation of Licea's right under California's Unruh Civil Rights Act.

Licea is represented by Scott J. Ferrell of Pacific Trial Attorneys, APC.
