MAYER BROWN: Mayer Brown strengthens litigation capabilities with double partner hire in Los Angeles

Partnership

Mayer Brown issued the following announcement on Sept. 17.

Mayer Brown announced that it has expanded its Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice with the addition of two highly regarded trial lawyers: veteran US Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutor Jason Linder, who joins the firm as a partner in Los Angeles and Washington DC, and leading securities litigator Glenn Vanzura, who joins the firm as a partner in Los Angeles. Both partners were previously with Irell & Manella LLP, where Mr. Linder was head of that firm’s Global Investigations and Anti-Corruption practice.

“We are thrilled to welcome these prominent litigators to our team of high-stakes trial lawyers and advocates,” said Richard Spehr, the leader of Mayer Brown’s global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. “Jason’s tenure at the DOJ, where he led multijurisdictional Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) investigations, as well as his extensive experience before the US Securities and Exchange Commission, will be of tremendous value to clients. His arrival continues the growth of our national investigation and enforcement capabilities, including in Los Angeles and Washington DC. Similarly, with class actions and securities litigation on the rise—particularly in California—Glenn’s experience leading complex securities matters will be invaluable to our clients. Together, both will substantially strengthen and deepen our already powerful white collar, regulatory and enforcement practice led by Dan Stein, a former head of the Southern District of New York’s Criminal Division.”

Mr. Linder advises corporations and executives on government and regulatory actions, internal investigations and corporate compliance matters, and white collar criminal defense. As a federal prosecutor for more than a decade, Mr. Linder most recently served as a senior trial attorney in the DOJ’s FCPA unit in Washington DC. There, he led some of the department’s most important and sophisticated international white collar criminal investigations, focusing particularly on matters involving FCPA and securities fraud violations. He tried numerous cases, argued before the federal courts of appeal, and served as lead trial counsel in a number of high-profile white collar matters. He acquired deep expertise in anti-corruption and other investigations in Asia, Latin America, and around the world, and in every significant business sector. Previously, Mr. Linder served as an assistant US attorney in the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. He began his career in private practice.

Mr. Vanzura focuses his practice on securities class action and derivative litigation, SEC investigations and enforcement actions, complex business litigation, white collar criminal defense and internal corporate investigations. He has represented corporations, directors, officers and other individuals in some of the country’s most significant bet-the-company litigations across a variety of industries. Before entering private practice, Mr. Vanzura specialized in securities and antitrust matters at Cornerstone Research, an economics and litigation consulting firm.

“I’ve long known and worked with Mayer Brown’s white collar partners; they are the best in the business and I’m eager to join the team as we advise and defend leading corporations and executives facing increasingly sophisticated and coordinated scrutiny from governments around the world,” said Mr. Linder. “With Mayer Brown’s global footprint across four continents and focused collaboration from top to bottom, we can deliver our clients results unparalleled by other firms in the market.”

Mr. Vanzura added, “Mayer Brown’s reputation for excellence, broad range of legal services, and deep relationships with California-based companies and those doing business in California provide important opportunities for clients and an ideal platform for the continued growth of my practice. I’m looking forward to my continued collaboration with Jason, and to working with our new colleagues to grow the firm’s litigation capabilities on the West Coast.”

Mr. Linder and Mr. Vanzura are highly active in the community. Mr. Linder serves as the national vice chair of the American Bar Association’s White Collar Crime Committee, an officer of the International Bar Association’s Business Crime Committee, and a board member of both the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He has represented pro bono both domestic violence victims and a proposed class of Los Angeles homeowners fighting a county tax assessment program. Mr. Vanzura’s community activities include service on the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee. He has also dedicated himself to pro bono matters, including the representation of low-income tenants and former members of the US armed services.

“Jason’s extensive white collar and investigations experience in both the public and private sectors, coupled with Glenn’s class action defense and complex commercial litigation experience, build upon our local trial experience and add significant heft to our overall securities and investigations capabilities in California and beyond,“ said Philip Recht, the partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office.
