A class action lawsuit has accused telecom Verizon of allegedly failing to protect customer data amid a data breach.

Named plaintiff Carlos Malacon filed the suit on behalf of himself and others allegedly similarly affected individuals. The complaint was lodged Feb. 21 in Los Angeles federal court.

According to the court filing, Verizon revealed on Feb. 7 that an employee had gained unauthorized access to sensitive information in September 2023. However, the company allegedly did not discover this breach until Dec. 21, nearly three months later. The exposed data included full names, physical addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, national identification details, gender information, union affiliations and compensation details of about 63,000 Verizon employees.

The lawsuit alleges that Verizon's failure to implement adequate security measures led to substantial harm and injuries to Malacon and other victims. It further states that due to this breach, victims are at imminent risk of identity theft and will have to spend time being extra vigilant for the rest of their lives.

Plaintiffs are represented by attorneys Kaveh S. Elihu and Saima Ali Gipson, of Employee Justice Legal Group PC, of Los Angeles.
