A group of workers has filed suit against cabinet maker Masterbrand, accusing the company of denying workers meal breaks and other alleged violations of California labor law.

The lawsuit was filed first in San Bernardino County Superior Court in October, but was removed to Los Angeles federal court on Dec. 8.

The lawsuit was filed by attorneys Paul K. Haines, Sean M. Blakely and Alexandra R. McIntosh, of Haines Law Group, of El Segundo, on behalf of named plaintiff Carmen Estrella De Vejar, identified as a California resident who worked for Masterbrand at its facility in Colton from August 2022 to February 2023.

The lawsuit accuses Masterbrand of allegedly not paying workers for time spent waiting to begin their shifts; allegedly not paying workers for meal breaks; and other alleged labor law violations.

The plaintiffs seek to expand the action to potentially include everyone who worked for Masterbrand in California in the preceding three to four years.

Plaintiffs are asking the court to order Masterbrand to pay unspecified penalties and "compensatory, consequential, general and special damages," plus attorney fees.

The defendants are represented by attorneys Jon D. Meer and Romtin Parvares, of the firm of Seyfarth Shaw LLP, of Los Angeles.
