Free Haircuts at One Safe Place Help Empower and Lift Victims of Abuse

A seemingly simple act like getting a haircut can hold immense significance for victims of violence and abuse. Recognizing this, the San Diego County District Attorney has introduced a free haircut initiative at One Safe Place: The North County Family Justice Center. Since its launch in July 2022, the program has provided over 90 haircuts, aiming to empower and uplift survivors as they rebuild their lives.

District Attorney Summer Stephan highlights the importance of this small gesture, explaining that a haircut can boost confidence and self-esteem for those emerging from abusive or violent situations. It signifies a fresh start and shows that the past does not define their future. Whether it's for a job interview or simply a desire for change, a haircut can be a significant step towards reclaiming their lives.

Local volunteer hairdressers generously offer their skills and time once a week to provide the haircuts. One of these volunteers, Debbie Duran from Top of the Line Cuts in Vista, has a personal connection to One Safe Place. The organization supported her and her daughter, and now Duran feels compelled to help these survivors and bring a smile to their faces through a simple haircut.

The haircuts take place at a salon attached to the Dress to Thrive Boutique, where nonprofit partners offer emergency clothing for families in need. Tracy Prior, Chief Deputy DA and Chief Operating Officer of One Safe Place, explains that this space allows survivors to choose their own clothing and decide how they want to wear their hair. It provides a sense of autonomy and control, further contributing to their empowerment.

One Safe Place offers a comprehensive range of support services, including acute crisis care, forensic medical exams, long-term mentoring, and legal assistance. It serves as a centralized location for victims of family violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and other crimes. The volunteer hairdressers involved in this initiative, including Maria Templeton, Amanda Roush, Debbie Duran, and Chanelle Simpson, play an essential role in helping survivors regain their self-confidence and move forward with their lives.

In conclusion, the free haircut initiative at One Safe Place: The North County Family Justice Center is a powerful step towards empowering and uplifting victims of abuse. By providing a simple haircut, this program allows survivors to take control of their appearance and symbolize their journey towards recovery. With the support of dedicated volunteer hairdressers and a comprehensive range of services, One Safe Place is making a difference in the lives of these individuals, giving them the tools they
