Asian Americans Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are often stereotyped as hard working, successful, smart — a “model minority” who excel in education and accomplish the “American Dream.” Despite its positive overtones, this stereotype is damaging for AAPIs and, as seen in the current Supreme Court cases involving admissions to Harvard and North Carolina, pits persons of color against each other and ignores the reality of systemic bias and hate that Asian Americans continue to encounter. This session will delve into the Model Minority myth and explore ways organizations can address the bias and outcomes of such stereotypes.
