H

BakerHostetler issued the following announcement on Dec. 6.

BakerHostetler announced that Jennifer L. Mitchell joined the firm as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Mitchell, who was previously with Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., becomes a member of the firm’s Digital Assets and Data Management Practice Group.

“BakerHostetler has established itself as a first-in-class adviser in data and privacy, and I am thrilled to join the firm,” said Mitchell. “I am extremely impressed with the depth of the DADM Practice Group’s capabilities. After meeting many of the firm’s attorneys, I realized that BakerHostetler was not only a practice fit but a very good cultural fit as well.”

Mitchell most recently served as vice president, privacy, legal compliance, at Sony Pictures. Before serving as Sony Pictures’ legal counsel, she served as global privacy officer for the Diabetes Care Division of Abbott Laboratories.

In her previous leadership roles at Fortune 100 companies, Mitchell was responsible for overseeing both consumer-facing and employee privacy programs. She built and implemented privacy compliance programs and supported complex consumer data initiatives in compliance with global privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Throughout the course of her career, she has also regularly provided strategic privacy counseling in the areas of product and app design, global merger and acquisition and divestiture activities, and data sharing arrangements.

“We are excited to have Jennifer join our practice. She has deep in-house experience that we believe translates into an appreciation for the operational challenges our clients are facing with the rapidly changing privacy landscape,” said Ted Kobus, chair of the DADM Practice Group. “Moreover, we have seen an increase in demand from our health care technology clients, and Jennifer’s broad experience will be invaluable.”

Mitchell’s arrival follows the addition of Daniel Kaufman to the DADM Practice Group. Kaufman was the former acting director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission.

Mitchell is also the latest in a string of strategic lateral hires in the firm’s California offices, which most recently welcomed partners Matt Kane, Sylvia Kim and Bethany Lukitsch.

“I enthusiastically welcome Jennifer to our office and to the firm. Her prior experience as in-house counsel with Fortune 100 companies allows her to understand our corporate clients’ needs,” said Eric Sagerman, managing partner of BakerHostetler’s Los Angeles office. “We continue to expand our privacy practice, and Jennifer is the ninth attorney to join the Digital Assets and Data Management Practice Group on the West Coast since January 2020.”

Mitchell earned both her J.D. and her B.A. from the University of Michigan. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (U.S./EU) and a Certified Information Privacy Manager.
