Fox Rothschild is pleased to welcome Kari L. Barnes to the Los Angeles office as a partner in the Intellectual Property Department.
“Kari is an asset to high-tech businesses of all sizes in the protection and monetization of their intellectual property assets,” said Emily J. Yukich, office managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. “Her ability to provide strategic advice on complex IP transactions, prosecution and defense of patents and trademarks will benefit our clients on a global scale.”
Barnes’ sophisticated knowledge of patent prosecution covers a broad range of technologies, particularly in the aerospace, computer hardware, software and medical device sectors. She also advises clients in high-tech industries on the unique intellectual property and regulatory compliance issues that arise in connection with government contracts. She has counseled aerospace companies under the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants of the Department of Defense, NASA, Missile Defense Administration and Jet Propulsion Laboratories and medical device companies under the SBIR grants of the Army, Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health.
Barnes guides large international companies on global intellectual property strategy, including the cost-effective creation and maintenance of foreign and domestic patent portfolios to protect market share, and advises small businesses and startups in their efforts to maximize intellectual property rights. In addition, she provides strategic advice on patent and trademark infringement, freedom to operate and patentability and helps clients assess the IP assets of potential acquisitions.
She earned her J.D., magna cum laude, from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and B.S., with high honors, from Colorado School of Mines.
