Baker & Hostetler LLP issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.
BakerHostetler announced that Matthew C. Kane and Sylvia J. Kim have joined the firm as partners in its labor and employment practice group. They are based in the firm’s Los Angeles and San Francisco offices, respectively. Two associates, including senior associate Amy Beverlin, accompany Kane and Kim in their move to BakerHostetler and are based in the firm’s Los Angeles office.
Kane, Kim and their team are the newest arrivals to the firm’s West Coast offices, following nearly 45 other attorneys who have joined in California since January 2019. Most recently Bethany Lukitsch joined as co-leader of BakerHostetler’s class action defense team, based in Los Angeles and trial lawyer Victoria Weatherford joined as a partner in the San Francisco office.
“Matt is well known to many at the firm,” said Eric Sagerman, managing partner of BakerHostetler’s Los Angeles office. “He is an exceptional attorney and having him join us was an easy decision on our part.”
“I am thrilled to welcome Sylvia,” said Robb Adkins, managing partner of BakerHostetler’s San Francisco office. “Our mission is to continue to add quality lawyers in the Bay Area, consistent with our strategic plan, and having Sylvia join our ranks does just that.”
Kane and Kim’s practice primarily includes helping employers in preventing, litigating and resolving employment-related claims, including wage and hour class and collective actions, California Labor Code Private Attorney General Act (PAGA) representative actions, misappropriation of trade secrets and non compete agreement claims and labor-management relations issues. Combined, they have significant experience representing clients in the financial services, food and beverage, hospitality, manufacturing, real estate services, retail, transportation and third-party logistics and distribution industries.
“I am delighted to join BakerHostetler’s exceptional labor and employment group,” said Kane. “Both Sylvia and I were attracted to the firm’s strong commitment to the West Coast and the depth of the practice group, nationwide.”
“I am looking forward to working alongside the firm’s tremendously skilled employment class action attorneys,” said Kim. “BakerHostetler's impressive labor and employment group, as well as its culture and overall industry and geographic footprint, are a fantastic fit for me, my practice and our team.”
BakerHostetler’s labor and employment group represents employers in all facets and at all stages of employment and labor relations. The firm’s lawyers routinely confront some of the most challenging issues facing employers in the modern workplace and they bring those experiences to clients both large and small and in a variety of industries. The team works together seamlessly, tapping the experience of more than 90 labor and employment lawyers coast to coast, and the broader circle of more than 900 colleagues across the firm who have extensive experience in a full spectrum of areas that affect business clients.
“As employment class and collective actions continue to rise – particularly on the West Coast – we are fortunate to have landed Sylvia and Matt,” said chair of BakerHostetler’s labor and employment practice group Amy Traub. “In addition to deepening the group in Los Angeles, Sylvia’s addition expands our capabilities in Northern California.”
