Nelson Mullins issued the following announcement on June 2.
Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has awarded its sixth year of diversity scholarships to three law students: Zahra Asadi, Alberto Lugo, and Eva Diaz. Each will receive a $10,000 scholarship and a salaried summer 2021 position in a firm office.
Asadi will work in the Charlotte, North Carolina office. A second-year student at Washington and Lee University School of Law, Asadi serves as managing editor of the German Law Journal, co-president of the American Constitution Society, and justice for the Student Judicial Council. She is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, and earned her BS in biochemistry from North Carolina State University.
Diaz, a second-year law student at the University of South Carolina School of Law, will work in the firm's Columbia office. At UofSC, she is research editor for the ABA Real Property, Trust, and Estate Law Journal; secretary of the Pro Bono Board; member of the Mock Trial Bar; and the historian and parliamentarian of the Christian Legal Society. She also serves as a research assistant for UofSC Law professor Emily Winston and as a guardian ad litem for Richland County CASA. Originally from Seneca, South Carolina, Diaz graduated cum laude from Clemson University Honors College, where she studied psychology and political science.
Lugo is a second-year student at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law and a recipient of the UCLA Law Achievement Fellowship. After completing his first year of law school, he externed at the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in the Hardcore Gang Division Unit. At UCLA Law, Lugo has participated in Moot Court and Mock Trial competitions and the Documentary Film Legal Clinic. He is enrolled in UCLA's Critical Race Studies program and is involved in a number of associations, including the Latinx Law Student Association, the First Gen Law Student Association, the Christian Law Student Association, and the Mexican American Bar Association, of which he is vice chair. Lugo earned his BA in English with a minor in philosophy from UCLA in 2018. He is a first-generation Mexican American and a native of Orange County, California.
