CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL: Attorney General Becerra: Federal Government Withdraws Supreme Court Challenge in Suit Over Public Safety Funds for California

Law money 12

California Attorney General issued the following announcement on Mar. 4.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra applauded the federal government’s decision to withdraw a request made by the previous administration for the U.S. Supreme Court to review a case involving tens of millions of dollars in public safety funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) program. As a result of the withdrawal, an earlier appellate decision secured by California — affirming that immigration enforcement requirements attached by the Trump Administration to fiscal year 2017 Byrne JAG program funds were unlawful — remains in place. The action helps protect $28.3 million in public safety funding used in criminal justice initiatives by communities across California.

“With the law and the facts on our side, we’ve been able to successfully hold the line to defend millions of dollars in public safety funds for our communities,” said Attorney General Becerra. “Bottom line: The action by the Biden Administration is a win for public safety and community trust. At the California Department of Justice, we are always ready to stand up in court for our people, our values, and our resources.”
