Lewis Brisbois issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.

Los Angeles Partner Daniel C. DeCarlo, Atlanta Partner Jonathan D. Goins, and Chicago Partners Jill Anderfuren and Bryan P. Sugar have been recognized by the World Trademark Review (WTR) in the 2021 edition of its annual research directory World Trademark Review 1000 - The World's Leading Trademark Professionals. This is the fourth consecutive year that Mr. DeCarlo, Mr. Goins, and Ms. Anderfuren have been ranked in the WTR 1000 (and Ms. Anderfuren's seventh time overall), and the first year that Mr. Sugar has been included. The WTR 1000 directory, which is in its eleventh year of publication, is developed through an extensive qualitative research process that identifies firms and individuals deemed outstanding in the practice of trademark law, taking into account factors including depth of expertise, market presence, and feedback from peers and clients.

Mr. DeCarlo, who serves as chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice, was similarly recognized by the WTR as a recommended expert. The directory describes, “Daniel DeCarlo earns credit for the integrity with which he practises law. He isn’t focused on money, but on getting the right results, and goes above and beyond to do so in and out of the courtroom.” Recently named to the Los Angeles Business Journal’s (LABJ) "Leaders of Influence: Top Litigators & Trial Lawyers in Los Angeles" list, Mr. DeCarlo has nearly three decades of experience in the intellectual property arena. He focuses his practice on complex business litigation matters, including the Lanham Act, trademarks, false advertising, copyright, unfair competition matters, and other related intellectual property claims.

Mr. Goins serves as vice-chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and is also a member of its Entertainment, Media, & Sports Practice. In highlighting Mr. Goins’ work, WTR notes that he “has a sparkling enforcement record, reflecting his talent for putting difficult conflicts to bed quickly and cost effectively through negotiation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).” With over 17 years of experience, Mr. Goins serves as lead counsel in litigating federal cases nationally for a wide range of clients involving trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, right of publicity, entertainment, breach of software contracts, and related business torts. He also lectures on copyright and trademark law as an adjunct professor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

Ms. Anderfuren, a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Law and Antitrust & Competition Practices, was recognized by WTR as a recommended expert who “does nothing short of amazing work in protecting and securing rights to clients’ key brands in their most important markets.” The directory describes her as “responsive, time-efficient, clear, practical, flexible and commercial.” With over 20 years of international experience in the analysis, prosecution, clearance, licensing, and litigation of trademarks, Ms. Anderfuren works with clients in the insurance, consulting, medical, and consumer products industries to build and maintain successful trademark protection strategies.

Mr. Sugar, who is also a member of Lewis Brisbois’ Intellectual Property & Technology Law Practice, focuses on the administration of domestic and international trademark registration programs, intellectual property issues in acquisitions and secured transactions, and litigation and counseling involving copyrights, trademarks, patents, domain names, e-commerce, licensing, rights of publicity, and rights in computer software and databases. WTR notes that he “is endorsed by contemporaries as a ‘fantastic lawyer and a terrific person’ to turn to for trademark prosecution and IP transactions.”
