Greenberg Traurig LLP issued the following announcement on Oct. 21.
Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has added veteran intellectual property litigator Brent D. Sokol as a shareholder in its Los Angeles office. Sokol focuses his practice on complex intellectual property disputes, including those involving international forums and multiple forms of intellectual property. He joins the firm from Jones Day, where he was a partner, and where he had practiced for nearly two decades.
“Brent is highly regarded in the global intellectual property community and we are pleased to welcome him to the firm,” said Ian C. Ballon, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. “In addition to his extensive lead litigation experience, Brent brings important insight to our team. A former biomedical engineer, he has significant jury trial and patent prosecution experience in the medical device field, among several others.”
Sokol has more than 25 years of experience guiding broadcasters, clothing companies, medical device companies, and other clients through landmark patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, and Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)/piracy claims. In addition, he litigates the restructured trademark rights of distressed companies, along with other trademark matters related to reorganization.
“Brent’s skills as an intellectual property litigator across the full spectrum of copyright, patent, trademark, and trade secret matters are an outstanding asset to our clients. We are proud to welcome him and to continue to grow our dynamic Los Angeles office,” said Los Angeles Office Co-Managing Shareholders Jeff E. Scott and Gregory A. Fishman in a joint statement. Scott is also co-chair of the firm’s Global Litigation Practice, which comprises more than 600 litigators worldwide.
Sokol regularly speaks on topics involving global restructuring of intellectual property assets. He is a member of the International Trademark Association’s (INTA), served for several years on its trademark enforcement committee, and has presented on its inaugural global trademark restructuring panel at the organization’s annual meeting. He has authored numerous updates on global trademark enforcement. Sokol earned a J.D., cum laude, from Boston University, and a B.S. from Northwestern University.
“I am very pleased to join Greenberg Traurig’s highly respected IP and litigation practices,” Sokol said. “My clients know and respect Greenberg Traurig and several had independently engaged the firm on other matters. I am confident that all of my clients will benefit from the firm’s global platform of resources and collaborative culture.”
