BAKER MCKENZIE: Baker McKenzie Adds Senior In-House Lawyer Matthew Nochowitz

Partnership

Baker Mckenzie issued the following announcement on March 23.

Baker McKenzie has added veteran in-house lawyer Matthew "Matt" Nochowitz to its North American Tax Practice as a Partner in Chicago, as the firm continues to expand and enhance its capabilities for multinational clients.

Matt spent the past 15 years at Whirlpool Corporation, where he held multiple senior finance positions including Vice President of Global Tax, Corporate Treasurer (also overseeing Global Real Estate and Enterprise Risk) and Corporate Controller. Matt has experience structuring complex transactions across multiple technical disciplines, international tax planning, global tax minimization, corporate reorganizations, and pre and post-merger integration. Matt's practice also includes enterprise risk and liquidity planning (particularly in a distressed environment), accessing global debt capital markets, foreign cash management, complex hedging strategies, and capital allocation strategies in the face of shareholder activism.

"With his extensive in-house experience, Matt brings a unique appreciation for the challenges facing our clients, particularly in the current economic environment," said Melinda Phelan, Chair of Baker McKenzie's North America Tax Practice. "Matt's leadership experience at Whirlpool, combined with his technical tax knowledge, will make him a trusted adviser for our clients in their international tax planning and transactional needs.

A certified public accountant, Matt also brings deep knowledge of the tax accounting rules impacting multinational companies. He is able to seamlessly integrate the tax, legal, treasury and accounting implications of structuring, negotiating, documenting and reporting large transactions.

"With his years of experience in senior roles at Whirlpool, Matt brings a valuable 'voice of the client' as we continue to provide superior service to multinationals in North America and around the world," said Colin Murray, Baker McKenzie's North America Chief Executive Officer.

Baker McKenzie's Tax Practice is one of the most highly rated and recommended among law firms worldwide. With more 300 practitioners in North America and more than 1,000 globally, the Firm’s Tax group is known for the quality of its tax advice in transactions worldwide, as well as in global tax policy, transfer pricing, indirect taxes, dispute resolution, and wealth management matters.

Baker McKenzie has added more than 40 partners in North America over the last two years, as it continues to strengthen its presence in key markets. In the tax practice, recent additions include international tax and transactional lawyers Jeff Rubinger and Summer LePree in Miami, state and local tax partners Mark Yopp in New York and Mike Shaikh in Los Angeles and US Senate tax policy advisor Christopher Hanna in Dallas.

Matt began his career at Baker McKenzie, working as an associate in the Tax practice at the Firm for four years before joining Whirlpool in 2004. He earned his BS from Indiana University and his JD from Indiana University School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Illinois.

Matt added, "I am thrilled to return to Baker McKenzie and be a part of its renowned tax practice. Baker's tremendous global platform is unmatched by any other firm, and I am very excited to draw on my in-house experience to provide best-in-class service to our clients."
